Just Looking: A Film for Replay Jeans, Directed by Michael Haussman
What started out as a special assignment, a long-format commercial for Replay Jeans, soon became a short film. JUST LOOKING was filmed in the exotic settings of Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, Lamu (an island in the Indian Ocean belonging to Kenya), India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia and London. Using W. Somerset Maugham’s THE RAZOR’S EDGE as inspiration, JUST LOOKING portrays the timeless theme of self-discovery. Capturing a world seldom seen by Western eyes, this film follows a young man’s journey across the globe in the pursuit of enlightenment.
Having traveled far and wide, the young man returns to his friends in London. He has transcended their world and in no way can they grasp what the young man has experienced. When asked where he’s been for all those years, he can only reply, “I’ve been… Just looking.” In a flashback of stunning imagery we see that he has lived among African tribes, suffered loss in a cholera epidemic in India, sailed on fishing boats, celebrated tribal initiation rites in the jungles of Indonesia, and meditated with Buddhist monks. And still, he is a restless soul, ready to embark on another journey.
JUST LOOKING has played at several film festivals, including Berlin, Milan, and Hamburg. The film also plays at the Replay stores in Milan, L.A., New York, and Japan.
